PETA says elephant at Bay County Fair is treated unfairly; fair organizers disagree

The presence of an African elephant, available for rides this week at the Bay County Fair and Youth Exposition in Bay City, has representatives for the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — or PETA — up in arms.

 

Fair organizers say they checked out the owner of the elephant, named Nosey, and are satisfied the animal is well cared for and meets U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements.

Newly married and just days from deployment to Afghanistan, Army Private Robert Rambo was back in Bay County for a weekend of rest and relaxation.

 

 

His celebration while on leave ended tragically early Sunday, June 9, when the vehicle he was riding in as a passenger crashed on a winding road in Bangor Township.

Saginaw, Mich. has a reputation of being one of the most dangerous cities in the country to live in.

 

Saginaw was ranked the most violent city in America from 2003 through 2008 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics. This year the FBI ranked Saginaw as the third most violent city.

 

These rankings are based on the most violent crimes per capita. Violent crimes consist of murder, non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

 

Saginaw was also named the most dangerous U.S. city for women in 2012, by Forbes.

In October 2011, Haley Coleman sat in a wheelchair at University Hospital in Ann Arbor wondering if she'd ever walk again.

 

The then 17-year-old Bangor Township John Glenn High School senior was working with therapists in an attempt to regain the most vital of her physical capabilities, which were compromised as part of her battle with brain cancer. Earlier that year, in May, Coleman had been diagnosed with a glioma tumor on her brain stem.
